Scrimshaw, a lost art, the art of the whalers. In this class you will learn how to create scrimshaw like the whalers of old. you will be using synthetic ivory, but your finished product will look and feel as authentic as the antiques you see in museums. Drawing skills are not a prerequisite, however patience is a plus. We will be using synthetic ivory, but we will discuss laws and alternative scrimshaw materials such as bone, horn, antlers and tagua nuts. Your finished pieces and pieces you will be able to make after class are beautifully incorporated into jewelry, leather, basketry, woodworking and more.

Kit Includes:

Your kit will include 1 plastic practice piece, 3 synthetic ivory pieces, written handouts and literature. All consumables such as ink, rubber cement, wax, q-tips, applicators, piano wire, drill bit, sand paper, scalpel blades, white Tripoli, sanding buffs, markers, cotton cloths.

Students should bring the following tools:

An optivisor or other form of magnification is recommended.

Instructor will provide the following tools for use in class:

All tools needed to participate in class will be provided by the instructor. This includes but is not limited to handles for blades, sharpening stones, buffing machine, buffs, scissors, work surfaces.
